A spokesperson for Transport for London (TfL) has commented on the proposed cycle hire scheme for the city, saying it is expected to help the environment and also ease congestion.
London mayor Boris Johnson recently unveiled details of the bicycle hire programme, which will see a total of 6,000 bikes available every 300 metres throughout the centre of the city.
The TfL spokesperson said that there will be a number of challenges during the implementation of the scheme, but if it is successful it could be extended beyond central London.
“Cycling has a huge role to play to reduce the impact on the environment, but also the dominant reason is about transport capacity in meeting the ever-growing demands on [the] London transport system, reducing congestion,” the representative added.
TfL carried out a feasibility study last year which found that there has been a pronounced increase in cycling recently, creating a substantial market for a bike hire programme in London.
The earliest time that London hotel guests and others could begin to make use of the scheme is summer 2010.
